Do you want to create an awesome Forest School portfolio? Follow our series of articles that will help you showcase your knowledge and skills to pass your Forest School leadership course with flying colours!

Unit 1 – Forest School Programmes and the Woodland Environment

In Unit 1 of your Forest School leader course you will gain knowledge of the benefits of woodlands, their structures and management. In unit 1 of your Forest School portfolio you will need to show that you:

  • Understand the structure of woodlands.
  • Know how to identify a range of flora and fauna and understand the importance of identification.
  • Understand the management of woodlands as a sustainable learning environment.
  • Understand the importance of the relationship between Forest School and the woodland environment.


Unit 2 – Practical Skills for a Forest School Programme

In Unit 2 of your Forest School leader course you will gain practical skills and be able to teach practical skills to Forest School participants. In unit 2 of your Forest School portfolio you will need to show that you:

  • Are able to apply a range of practical skills relevant to a Forest School programme.
  • Know how to facilitate a range of practical skills relevant to a Forest School programme in line with the Forest School ethos and principles.


Unit 3 – Learning and development at a Forest School Programme

In Unit 3 of your Forest School leader course you will gain knowledge and understanding of the Forest School pedagogy and approach to Learning and Development. In unit 3 of your Forest School portfolio you will need to show that you:

  • Understand the Forest School Principles and holistic approach to learning and development in relation to an ‘Introduction to Forest School Programme’.
  • Understand the value of the play process at Forest School.
  • Understand relevant theories of learning and development and their application to Forest School.
  • Understand the impact of behaviour on learning and development at Forest School.
  • Know how to reflect on own Forest School training.


Unit 4 – Planning a Forest School Programme

In Unit 4 of your Forest School leader course you will gain knowledge and skills to plan a Forest School programme with an understanding of the ecological impact of Forest School. In unit 4 of your Forest School portfolio you will need to show that you:

  • Understand the development of Forest School.
  • Are able to manage the ecological impact of a Forest School programme.
  • Are able to develop the underpinning documents required for a Forest School programme.
  • Are able to plan a Forest School programme in line with the Forest School ethos and principles.


Unit 5 – Delivery of a Forest School Programme

In Unit 5 of your Forest School leader course you will gain knowledge and skills to facilitate and evaluate a Forest School Programme. In unit 5 of your Forest School portfolio you will need to show that you:

  • Are able to facilitate an ‘Introduction to Forest School Programme’ according to the Forest School ethos and principles.
  • Are able to assess the impact of the ‘Introduction to Forest School Programme’ on participants.
  • Are able to evaluate an ‘Introduction to Forest School Programme’.
